Genetic & Genomic Testing — your inherited risk, read and acted on.
Physician-ordered clinical genetic sequencing for inherited heart disease, hereditary cancer, and medication response — interpreted and built into your prevention plan by a former Mayo Clinic + UMN faculty internist.
From Dr. Sahni
Some of the most important things about your health were written before you were born. A father’s early heart attack, an aunt’s breast cancer, a relative who dissected an aorta in their forties — these can point to a single inherited variant that changes everything about how we screen and treat you. The right genetic test, ordered for the right reason, can find it.
But a genetic result is only as useful as what a physician does with it. I read it against your full history, integrate it with your labs and imaging, set your surveillance, and help your family get screened too.
What we can test for
- Inherited cardiovascular disease — heritable thoracic aortopathy (aneurysm & dissection risk), cardiomyopathy, inherited arrhythmias, and familial hypercholesterolemia.
- Hereditary cancer risk — BRCA1/2, Lynch syndrome, and broader hereditary cancer panels for individuals with a personal or family history.
- Pharmacogenomics — how your genes affect the way you metabolize and respond to common medications, to guide safer, more precise prescribing.
Testing is performed through Invitae, a Labcorp company, from a simple blood or saliva sample.
Why genetics belongs with a physician — not a mail-order kit
- Ordered for a reason. We select the right panel based on your personal and family history — not a one-size-fits-all consumer scan.
- Interpreted in context. A variant means little on its own. We read it alongside your labs, imaging, and risk profile.
- Turned into a plan. A result changes what we do: surveillance intervals, treatment thresholds, and which specialists to involve.
- Extended to your family. Inherited risk is shared. When something meaningful turns up, we help guide screening for first-degree relatives.
- Genetics expertise on hand. When a result is complex, dedicated genetic-counseling support can be brought in — so it’s never read in isolation.
- Diagnostic-grade. Accredited clinical laboratory results that belong in your medical record — not a screening-grade hobby report.
How it works with Private MD
- Consultation — we review your personal and family history and decide together which testing, if any, is appropriate for you.
- Test ordered — we place the order through Invitae; you provide a blood or saliva sample.
- Results to us — delivered to the ordering physician, typically within 2–3 weeks.
- Interpretation session — we walk through what the result means for you, integrated with your full health picture.
- Plan & family screening — surveillance, prevention, and cascade-screening guidance for relatives who may share the risk.
Who should consider this
- Family history of early heart disease, aortic aneurysm or dissection, or sudden cardiac death
- Premature atherosclerosis or a very high cholesterol pattern out of proportion to lifestyle
- Personal or family history of cancer — especially young-onset, or multiple affected relatives
- Anyone who wants medication-response (pharmacogenomic) guidance before starting therapy
- A desire to understand inherited risk early, while there is still time to act on it
Genetic testing is not right for everyone, and not every result is actionable. Part of our job is helping you decide whether testing makes sense for you — and making sure you understand what a result will, and won’t, tell you before we order it.
Cost & logistics
- Ordered through your physician; a simple blood or saliva sample.
- Billed to insurance when covered — many inherited-disease and hereditary-cancer panels are, with a qualifying indication such as a strong family history.
- Self-pay options when insurance doesn’t apply. We talk through expected cost before anything is ordered.
- Results typically within 2–3 weeks.
- Physician interpretation and integration are included with membership — the result becomes part of your ongoing prevention and longevity care.
Coming soon to Private MD.
Our genetic & genomic testing program is launching shortly. If inherited risk runs in your family, we’d be glad to talk — and let you know the moment it’s available.
